Animal control

The Animal Control Bylaw regulates animals in the Town of Stratford and, in particular, prescribes for the provision of needs, the licensing and control of dogs and the prohibition of classes of animals in residential areas or in all areas of the Town.

With respect to dogs, the bylaw requires that:

  • all dogs must be licensed annually which you can do at the Town offices at 234 Shakespeare Drive or at the P.E.I. Humane Society.
  • all dogs must be leashed when not on the owner’s property, and dog defecation must be removed immediately when not on the owner’s property.
  • owners must obtain a kennel license if more than two dogs are kept in a household for boarding or breeding.
  • guide dogs must be registered but the license fee is waived.

The enforcement of the Animal Control Bylaw is contracted out to the P.E.I. Humane Society. The bylaw requires that companion animals are properly cared for and it also includes a list of animals that are not allowed to be kept in the Town or in certain areas of the Town. To report a complaint about dogs at large, excessive barking, or dangerous dogs please contact the PEI Humane Society at 892-1190 or via email at [email protected]

Please respect others by following the requirements of the animal control bylaw.

Active transportation

Sidewalks, trails and bicycle lanes are the responsibility of the Town of Stratford. The installation and promotion of active transportation in the town is guided by our Active Transportation Plan and the Regional Active Transportation Plan. The location of our sidewalks, bike lanes and trails are shown of the Town Map. For inquiries or complaints about sidewalks, trails or bike lanes, please call our Infrastructure Department at 569-4662 or email [email protected].

Wildlife/nuisance animals

There are an abundance of foxes living in the Town and recently, there have been increased reports of coyote sightings in the Town. Foxes and coyotes are wild animals and the Provincial Forests, Fish and Wildlife Division has published a number of brochures on how to best deal with nuisance wildlife animals. Providing food for foxes not only reduces their fear of humans and their ability to fend for themselves, the food supplied for foxes may inadvertently create a welcoming environment for coyotes (and foxes are often a food source of coyotes as well). As with any animal, it is always easier to keep foxes and coyotes from learning bad habits than to break those habits once they are established. Residents are encouraged to scare foxes off of their property and to not feed them. For more information or to report a problem, call the Provincial Fish, Forestry and Wildlife Division at (902) 368-4683.
